Summer Flower

January 27, 2011

I’m not sure what this flower is but it’s beautiful….even on these scorching summer days there is beauty to be found!

Isn’t nature fascinating?  Looking closer at the image I noticed the camouflaged butterfly!

Cindy, I think you’ll find these are the beautiful Naked Lady lilies. So called because they have no leaves. Other common names are Belladonna lily and March lily.
I reckognised the lily then looked it up. But the “butterfly” really intrigued me. Some internet research eventually showed it to be a moth known as Utetheisa Lotrix with common names of Salt and Pepper Moth and Heliotrope Moth. It’s a lovely thing.
I could be wrong with these. Someone else may have some ‘real’ knowledge on them.
Thanks for these refreshing photos.

Thanks for that Kath, I was hoping someone would help me out! I did think they might have been the Naked Lady lillies but wasn’t 100% certain! And I kind of wondered if it was a moth but butterfly sounds prettier!! 😉

I certainly agree with you Cindy. The name Salt and Pepper Moth doesn’t do anything for its image either. An overseas one that looks the same has Crimson Speckled Moth as a common name. That’s nicer. It’s a beautiful find anyway. Maybe a fairy left it there to rest before needing it to carry her in a parade before the Queen of Moths tonight. Butterflies would be the guests of honour of course.(If any children are reading this I’m just trickin’)

You are very right about those flowers being beautiful, but there’s another word to describe them too, magnificent!!!
